Christmas: A History

Christmas is celebrated all over the world – as a day of giving Christmas gifts, spending time with family and friends, and having fun, but also, by Christians as the anniversary of one of the most joyous and holiest days of the year, when they celebrate the coming to earth of Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift to mankind. It is celebrated on the 25th day of December each year. This is the darkest part of winter for the northern hemisphere. This date was chosen so that the Christian festival of Christmas could replace the older pagan midwinter festivals.

Winter Solstice

The tradition of celebrating during the darkest part of winter stretches back into antiquity, and was a part of the culture of many ancient civilisations. It was often a celebration of light and birth that took place on, or just after the winter solstice. They would celebrate the fact that the days would begin to grow longer and the nights shorter as winter began to slowly change to spring.

Saturnalia

One of the most well-known winter solstice celebrations was Saturnalia which was held in honour of Saturn – the Roman god of agriculture. This was a festival where the normal order of Roman society was turned around. Slaves became masters, peasants commanded the city. The festival began the week before the solstice began and lasted for a month.

Another celebration that the Romans held during the Winter Solstice was the celebration of the birth of the soldier’s god, Mithras – god of the unconquerable sun. This took place on December 25th each year and for some Romans, was the most sacred day of all.

Yule

The Norse who lived in Scandinavia celebrated Yule from the date of the winter solstice – December 21 – through to January. It was a celebration of the return of the sun after the darkest days of winter. Fathers and sons would go out and bring back huge logs of wood which the families would then light. The festivities would then continue until the log burned out which often took as many as 12 days. It was believed that each spark the fire emitted represented a new animal that would be born during the coming year.

Prefect Time

In most areas of Europe during pagan times, the middle of winter was a perfect time to hold a festival. Often, at that time of year, families and villages would slaughter a large part of their flocks and herds so they would not have to feed them for the rest of the winter. This was the only time of the year when many people had fresh meat.

Additionally, around this time, most of the beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages that had been made earlier in the year had finally fermented and would be ready for drinking. This meant that this was the one time of the year when they had food to spare.

Christmas Began To Be Celebrated

Until about the 4th century, the Christian Church only celebrated Easter – the Death and Resurrection of Christ. In the 4th century, it was decided by the officials of the church that the birth of Jesus should be celebrated as a holiday. Because we do not know the exact date of His birth, although some believe that He was born in the spring due to the references of shepherds watching their flocks in the fields, the pope at the time, Julius I chose December 25th as the day on which the church would celebrate. Although not known for certain, it is commonly believed that he chose this date in an attempt to absorb the pagan winter solstice festivals. By the end of the 8th century, the celebration of Christmas has spread over most of Europe and the areas of the Middle East that were then Christian.

Celebration Of Christmas During The Middle Ages

By the Middle Ages, the pagan religions had, for the most part, died out, and had been replaced by Christianity. Because of the fact that the Church had established the date of Christmas so that it coincided with, and eventually replaced the pagan festivals, many of the core traditions of those festivals became a part of the Christmas festivities.

Christmas during the Middle Ages was a rowdy and raucous affair. On Christmas Day, believers would attend church first thing in the morning, and after that it would be celebrated in a drunken, carnival-like atmosphere. In the large houses, a student or beggar would be nominated as the “Lord of Misrule” and the rich celebrants would play the part of his subjects.

In those days, Christmas became a time when the richer upper classes could repay their debt to society – whether it be real or imagined – by entertaining those that were less fortunate than they were. The poorer classes would go to the houses of the rich and demand food and drink. If their demands were not met, they would then play tricks on the household.

A Cromwellian Christmas

In the early 17th century, a wave of religious reform swept Europe. This changed the way Christmas was celebrated. In 1645, the monarchy of England was overthrown, and the Puritans, with Oliver Cromwell at their head, took power. They vowed to cleanse England of all decadence and debauchery and as a part of their movement, they cancelled Christmas. When Charles II of England was restored to the throne, he reinstated all of the things which were banned by the puritan government, including Christmas.

Christmas In Colonial America

The pilgrims who arrived in America in 1620 were fanatical Puritans, even more orthodox in their beliefs than Cromwell. Because of this, the celebration of Christmas was not observed by many American settlers. In fact, celebrating Christmas was actually illegal in Boston from 1659 to 1681 and anyone caught celebrating was fined. It was not until 1870 that Christmas was recognised as a federal holiday in America.

Christmas Today

Today, Christmas is celebrated all over the world, and has become extensively commercialised and there are many favourite Christmas traditions that are observed all over the world – things like Christmas trees, carol singing, the giving of Christmas gifts and of course, Father Christmas coming down the chimney to deliver gifts to all the good girls and boys.

Buying Used Can Work for You!

Many people do not like the idea of buying something used. Buyers want, as much as possible, to purchase something that is brand new. There is one particular item that a buyer may consider purchasing previously owned and that is a bucket truck. While this vehicle is best when obtained brand new, its high price tag is a major reason why buyers consider purchasing it used.

As the name implies, a pre-owned or used bucket truck is a vehicle that has been owned and used by someone else. This type of heavy-duty equipment is often resold for a variety of reasons. Owners who want to avoid high maintenance and repair costs in the future often sell these vehicles while they still have some resale value. Fleet vehicles, such as those used by electric companies, are sold when they reach a certain mileage in order to avoid the expensive costs involved with maintaining older trucks with higher mileage. Used bucket trucks are also resold by finance companies who have repossessed them from borrowers who were unable to make payments.

Advantages

While the idea of procuring a used bucket truck that has lost some of its useful life may not appeal to some, there are actually many reasons why buyers choose to purchase this type of vehicle.

Low Overall Cost – The biggest benefit of purchasing pre-owned is the lower cost, which is a benefit that every buyer wants. A used bucket truck has a lower value due to depreciation. As any vehicle ages, it gradually loses value. The higher accumulation of mileage that pre-owned vehicles have is another reason for its lower cost.

Fast Financing Approval – When financing previously owned equipment, lending institutions are more lenient and approval for a loan to secure these vehicles is much faster than it would be for an application to purchase a brand new one. The reason for this is that this type of pre-owned vehicle costs less and therefore is much less risky to finance.

Short Installment Term – The number of payments required to pay off this type of equipment will be much less, since the principal amount is smaller. Additionally, buyers will not necessarily need a large down payment; typically, the financial institution will only ask for a down payment of 20 to 25 percent of the principal amount.

Low Risk – One big fear any borrower has is the possibility of defaulting on their loan. Thankfully, purchasing a previously owned vehicle is less risky since the borrower will have an affordable loan rate as compared to financing a brand new vehicle.

Debunking the Misconception

One of the biggest misconceptions that a buyer may have about purchasing a used bucket truck is that it will break down more easily and require constant maintenance. While it is true that some of the service life of the vehicle has been consumed by the previous owner, these pieces of utility equipment have a considerably long service life; therefore, the price of these pre-owned vehicles is a good investment.

Although there are some used bucket trucks being sold that are no longer really useable, there are many others with decent prices that are worth the investment. The technique to learn before purchasing this type of vehicle is how to sort the good from the bad. Once a buyer learns how to do this, then finding a good deal at a reputable dealership is fairly easy. Choose a truck that came from a large fleet. These trucks are well-maintained and are resold while they are still in good shape. It also helps to have a mechanic perform an inspection on the vehicle before finalizing the purchase to ensure that it is a high quality machine in good working condition.

Unlike the misconceptions that many buyers have about used bucket trucks, this pre-owned equipment can actually turn out to be a good investment. As long as the consumer has the proper knowledge and knows the right approach to take when acquiring such a vehicle, buying a pre-owned bucket truck may be an even better choice than buying one that is brand new!

Chiropractic Is Effective For Bulging Discs

Chiropractic is effective for bulging discs. You may have heard someone say that they have a bulging disc or herniated disc. To better understand what these are, it helps to understand a little about the anatomy of the spine. The bones or vertebrae that form the spine have spongy cushions between them called discs. These act as shock absorbers in the spine and allow proper movement of joints in the spine. When these discs are injured, they can bulge out of their normal position or even break open.

It is possible to have a bulging disc anywhere along the course of the spine. However, most injured discs are in the low back or lumbar spine. The next most common area for them to occur is in the neck or cervical spine. They may also occur in the mid back or thoracic spine, but this is rare.

The two main causes of a bulging disc are spinal degeneration or trauma to the spine. Spinal degeneration is when there is wearing out of the discs of the spine over time. Trauma to the spine, such as lifting improperly or an auto injury can cause damage to the discs more suddenly. Both of these injuries often result in the bones of the spine being misaligned and fixated. The misaligned bones result in pressure on the discs causing instability of the disc and spinal joint.

The joint loses its normal motion and the disc can no longer get the proper fluid and nutrition it needs. The disc dries out and loses its normal flexibility. This can cause tiny cracks and tears in the outer part of the disc. As a result, the soft gel that is normally in the center of the disc will leak out to the outer part of the disc, resulting in the outer part of the disc bulging out. It is also possible for the disc to completely break open resulting in the gel leaking out of the entire disc and break off into the area where the spinal cord is. This is much more serious than a bulging disc.

What are the symptoms of a bulging or herniated disc? With a bulging or herniated disc there may be symptoms or no symptoms at all. Symptoms often occur when the bulging disc causes pressure on a nerve root that exits the spinal cord nearby. When this nerve irritation occurs, it can cause pain, numbness or weakness in the area of the body where the nerve travels to.

It is common for a bulging disc in the low back to cause pain and numbness in the buttock and down the leg. This is often referred to as sciatica. If you have numbness and weakness in both legs and loss of bladder or bowel control you should seek medical care immediately. This may be a sign of cauda equine syndrome. This is a rare condition that is considered a medical emergency because if left untreated it may result in permanent loss of bowel or bladder control and paralysis of the legs.

A Chiropractor can help to diagnose a bulging or herniated disc. A Chiropractor will perform an examination and ask you questions to determine if you might have a disc problem. The chiropractor will also perform specific tests to help diagnose the cause of the problem. Sometimes the chiropractor may need to send you for an MRI or CT scan to confirm the disc problem or rule out any other problems. Chiropractors help may with disc bulges or herniations. They perform specific adjustments to the bones of the spine to help restore normal alignment and motion. This can help to correct the cause of the problem. Many report excellent results with chiropractic and disc problems. Chiropractors also work with other healthcare professionals to provide the best care for the patient.

Varieties of Carpal Tunnel Exercises

To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome from becoming acute, consider some exercises to prevent the tendons and muscles from becoming tight. Medical procedures should not be the first consideration. There are noninvasive treatments that can bring comfort and healing.

Keeping your muscles and tendons flexible and strong can can relieve pain in the carpal tunnel. Frequent muscle stretching throughout day can reduce the swelling within the tunnel and bring relief by lessening the pressure around the carpal median nerve. The aspect of permanent injury is reduced.

I am going to list some exercises that can be done at home or at the work place to help those doing repetitive motion jobs.

These routines should be begin at the start of the workday and at various times during the day. Do these routines 3 to 5 time a week. Following these tips will bring healing to the carpal tunnel and minimize your discomfort.

To limber up, message the palm and back of the hand with thumb and fingers. Also message the muscles in the top and underside of the forearm to relax the muscles and work out knots in the muscles. Use firm pressure as you message. With the hand held away from the body in the “stop” position gently bend the fingers back toward the forearm until you feel the muscles stretch. Hold for about 5 seconds. Make a fist and then extend fingers out from fist. Repeat 4 or 5 times.

Stand or sit with your elbows at your waistline, your forearms extended in front of you parallel to the floor with your palms down. Make a fist with both hands and rotate hands back and forth. Open up the fist and extend your fingers. Repeat these exercises 10 times

Again with your elbows near your waist and your forearms parallel the the floor and in front of you with palms down grasp a one pound weight in each hand. Slowly let the weights bend your wrists down. Raise the weight to palms extended and repeat about 10 times. The one pound weight can be any thing that is handy and easy to grasp. Typically a small dumbbell is used.

With the same arm elbow position as above, hold a one pound weight in each hand. With the wrist held straight, slowly rotate your wrists from side to with a windshield wiper type motion. Repeat ten times.

With your elbows at your waist line, extend your forearms out in front of you parallel to the floor, hold a one pound weight in each hand. Slowly turn your wrists until your palms are facing up. Turn your wrists so your palms face down. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

These procedures have no side effects. If pain becomes severe when doing one or more of these exercises because of advanced stages of carpal tunnel syndrome, discontinue the ones that cause pain and continue with the rest. Slowly work those exercises that caused pain back into the exercise routine.

Why Do We Have Music

Why we have music is much more difficult to explain than how and why we use music. Music is based on a lot of things that we refer to in life, if you were asked the question, am I a lot happier when music is being played when I am working? Like mine, your answer to that would probably be yes, especially if it is music that you can sing along to that you know or associate with happy times.

From early records and before that from archeological findings man has made some form of music, initially, by banging sticks together to form simple rhythms. For mankind music seems to be an essential part of life.

Music is used for a wide range of modern-day activities such as parties, television commercials, funerals, sports, etc. Can you imagine a television commercial without music in the background? There would be nothing to emphasize the essential elements of the commercial or to attract you to watch it initially. It is not a fault with the broadcasting that the music for adverts is louder than the program you were watching. The chances are you wouldn’t even look at the commercial if there wasn’t music in it. It’s the music and the way it is played that attracts you, because that way you begin to associate that advert or whatever is on the television at that time, with it, so you get to recognize the advert or program by its theme music.

Music has been used for military means throughout history to stir the troops into the right mood for battle and to terrify the enemy. Then later it is used to mourn the dead and to celebrate victories.

Can you imagine attending a wedding without music being played? The music is used to set the tone of the proceedings. In the wedding proceedings, first comes the bright cheerful music announcing the arrival of the bride. Followed by the dignified music of the bride with her entourage proceeding down the aisle, then the solemn music as the ceremony proceeds and the register is signed followed by the joyful music as the bride and groom leave the church for their new happy life. Happy music is used to signify the happy life to follow.

To continue with the wedding analogy, consider the brides walk down the aisle without music being played. (I would want to do the quick step to get to my groom). The music sets the pace and provides dignity to the procession. The guests know, which points the proceedings have reached by listening to the music. There is no need for a commentary or notices. The music tells the story. Why we have music is hard to quantify. How we use music and why we use music in the way that we do is much easier to explain. Music permeates life. From early church music, through battle music to entertainment, music is constantly heard and used as part of proceedings.

Pollution in the Air

Pollution is the contaminants in an environment that cause instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the physical systems or living organisms they are in. Air pollution, one major pollutant, has a great effect on the earth. Air is shared among all living organisms, but when it is polluted by a factory in China, a fire in Australia, a dust storm in Africa, or car emissions in the United States; it can undeniably affect everything in this world.

The harmful things in the air are impacting human health, affecting the climate, and creating acid rain which harms the environment. Humans have no choice, but to breathe in the air around them and when it is polluted they breathe in ozone particles and harmful gases that can harm their lungs, heart, and overall health which can even lead to death. For example, 63 people died in Belgium in 1930, 20 people died in Pennsylvania in 1948, and more than 4,000 died in London in 1952 due to severe air pollution. By living in a world full of environmental problems and breathing the air over many years is extremely dangerous and causes defects to the human body. It can create many life threatening diseases such as cancer. Another example are the elderly, the young, and those with asthma or severe bronchitis are the most to be potentially vulnerable to harmful things. Children are at greater risk because their bodies have not fully developed and their lungs are still at an early stage of growing. Children are more active and are outside more so they are exposed more to the air. Humans are greatly affected and as a result develop severe diseases and problems with their health.

Air pollution affects the climate in many ways such as creating global warming. For example, greenhouse gases cause global warming by trapping heat from the Sun in the Earth’s atmosphere. Car exhausts and harmful things are released from smokestacks at factories and power plants harming the atmosphere and as a result many major natural disasters occur more often. Another example is that environmental problems contain certain dark particles, such as carbon and absorb solar radiation and scatter sunlight. The pollution can reduce the amount of the Sun’s energy reaching the earth’s surface by as much as 35 percent. The smog which created by cities and factories contain a mixture of air pollutants can even travel to rural areas because of the wind which greatly affect the environment around it.

Climate change due to air pollution greatly affects the world and can lead to even more dangers. Acid rain, a form of pollutants created by air pollution can greatly affect the property, forests, water resources, and wildlife. For example, acid rain can harm buildings, monuments, outdoor statues, and other structures. The chemicals in air pollution eat away at materials such as sandstone, limestone, mortar, and different metals. Acid rain dissolves stone and can create cracks in buildings. Acid rain can affect the expensive monuments which can be very expensive to repair. Another example is damage due to acid rain kills trees and harms animals, fish, and other wildlife. When acid rain soaks into the ground, it can make the soil an unfit habitat for many living things.

Acid rain also changes the chemistry of the water in lakes and streams, harming fish and other aquatic life. By destroying the habitat, food, and water that plants and animals need to survive greatly harms the ecosystem and is extremely bad. The world is full of much pollution that is unpreventable, but air pollution is one that we humans caused and effected many things. Thus, impacting human health causing diseases, affecting the climate by causing global warming, and creating acid rain which is extremely harmful to the living organisms around it. The effects of air pollution are indeed a serious problem throughout the world and should be concerned about.

Tinnitus Remedies and the B Complex Vitamins

Researchers have found that people who are lacking in B vitamins often experience hearing problems one of which is tinnitus. This vitamin group is primarily responsible for keeping our metabolism in sync. However, this group of complex vitamins has two other important responsibilities one of which is to make sure our nervous system is operating properly and secondly to help the body relieve stress by burning off excess energy.

Research scientists believe that we do more for our systems by taking the complex B vitamins rather than by just ingesting a single kind of B vitamin. Because they are water-soluble we lose them from our bodies on a daily basis and therefore they have to be replenished every day. A lack of these nutrients can cause many different difficulties for us including tinnitus.

Some other conditions we can develop because of a deficiency of these vitamins are other types of hearing impairment, ringing in the ear, vision difficulties, anemia and various nervous conditions. One of the reasons tinnitus is more prevalent these days is our growing dependence on eating processed foods which doesn’t contain this vitamin group.

Because ear ringing tinnitus can be a byproduct of this deficiency the natural approach would be to treat the problem by introducing B complex vitamins into the patient’s regular diet. Studies have found that a lack of vitamins B1 and B12 to be a major contributing factor to the development of tinnitus.

The only problem is this correlation between a B complex vitamin deficiency and tinnitus hasn’t been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt because the findings have been based on only a few results. So all that can be stated, with any certainty, is these research results indicate a possibility of hearing problems as a result of a lack of B complex vitamins in the diet.

However, in spite of these results there have been tinnitus vitamin remedies suggested as a treatment for this condition which, when used, have shown positive results. People can, however, increase their consumption of the B complex vitamins the natural way by eating more lean beef, fresh vegetables, dairy products such as fresh milk and cheese and tuna fish.

Never the less these scientific studies and the resultant findings indicate the importance of following a healthy diet not only as a remedy for tinnitus but also as a preventative measure so you won’t develop this condition later in life.
